II. History: Characteristics: Limited to those things that will probably not change.
    Land Area: (square miles approximately)
    Population: (approximately)

HISTORY:

The Minsi Indians of the Lenni Lenape nation were the first inhabitants of this wooded corner of Morris County. Deeded from the Minsi as part of the Properties of New Jersey lands in 1708.

The first settlers of Mendham Township came for its forests and iron ore, although their main objective was to practice their religion. In March 1749, the entire area comprising both Mendhams, was incorporated by the Morris County Court as Mendham Township. Not until 1906, were the 6 square miles known today as Mendham Borough separated, and incorporated.

There are a few different theories about how Mendham got its name. One is that the town was named for Mendham, England, another is that the Byrams, early settlers of the town named it after Mendon, Massachusetts, where they once had lived, and also a legend that Ebeneezer Byram, who established the Black Horse Tavern shouted I’ll “mend’em”.

By 1748 the area housed iron forges, sawmills, and gristmills along the North Branch of the Raritan River. This early settlement became known as Ralston, after the Ralston family.

On the eastern side of Mendham Township, brooks that formed the beginnings of the Whippany River attracted settlers to the valley called Water Street or Waterville, today known as Brookside. Industries in this area, included a tannery, shoe factory, glassworks, carpet mill, and iron works.

Following the Civil War, Mendham Township found it difficult to compete with larger urban factories. Farming had always been a major activity in the township, and while manufacturing declined, many people continued to farm.

Despite its present-day transformation from a rural farming community to a residential suburb, Mendham Township retains its early character through its carefully preserved homes, farm buildings and villages, with zoning practices and selective development playing a major role. Many farms and estates still dot the rolling hillsides and wooded terrain.

CHARACTERISTICS: Mendham Township is a beautiful residential community. It has a scenic, gently rolling landscape and is about 70% “developed”. Located just southwest of Morristown, it is approximately 35 miles west of New York City and 28 miles northwest of Newark.

LAND AREA: 17.8 square miles in south central Morris County

POPULATION: 4,600 (approximately).
